LO I-To, born in Tamsui in 1936, is a pastor, composer, and ethnomusicologist. Raised in a Christian family, LO accompanied his father, Pastor LOH Hsien-Chun, to conduct missions in Taiwan since his teenage years. He consequently developed the idea of localizing church music and then dedicated himself to Taiwanization of hymns and to the research of Taiwanese music. He traveled to the US twice, where he received the Master's degree in music from the Union Theological Seminary in New York and the PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles. After returning to Asia, he taught at Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music, Manila and Tainan Theological College while conducting fieldwork to collect music in Taiwan and in other regions of Asia. His publications include ‘New Songs of Asian Cities,’ ‘Hymns from the Four Winds,’ and ‘Sound the Bamboo: CCA Hymnal 2000.’
