TZENG Shing-Kwei is a composer and educator whose compositions combine traditional and avant-garde styles. Born in Pingtung in 1946, he began to be interested in music when studying at Pingtung Teachers College (the predecessor of National Pingtung University). In 1968 he was admitted to National Taiwan Normal University with a waiver of the entrance exam and studied in the music department. In 1977 he received a full fellowship sponsored by the Ministry of Education to study in the Freiburg Conservatory of Music (Hochschule für Musik Freiburg) in Germany, where he majored in composition. After returning to Taiwan, he began to teach at National Taiwan Normal University in 1981 and, meanwhile, was active in premiering his musical works. His compositions in his earlier phase trace the origin of Chinese culture and then interweave traditional elements with modern compositional techniques. In recent years he has dedicated himself to the promotion of electronic music, attempting to explore new possibilities for musical creation.
