CHEN Qing-Song was born in Miaoli in 1915. His father taught him how to play the suona (a Han Chinese shawm) as a child. He also learned how to play erhu, Chinese percussion, beiguan opera music and the various singing styles of Hakka folk songs. Chen eventually established his own Hakka bayin ensemble, training pupils and holding performances, touring Hsinchu, Miaoli, Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Hualien counties. In 1959, he formed the Qing Mei Ensemble, a tea-picking Hakka opera troupe, and started teaching beiguan classes in Miaoli County. Known for being able to play four suona at the same time, Chen was a master musician to an entire generation of Hakka musicians. He was awarded the Chinese Arts Award. Chen died in 1984.
