LIU Wen-Liang, born in Keelung in 1962, is a Taiwanese opera musician, composer, and instrument-maker. After graduating from the department of Marine Engineering at Maritime College (now known as Taipei College of Maritime Technology), LIU worked for Ming Yang Records and Fang Shan Records. During this time, he collected numerous gramophone records and CDs and became interested in classical music. In 1995 he began to compose Taiwanese operas. LIU explored the musical possibilities and inclusiveness of Taiwanese opera by orchestrating and arranging gezaixi (koa-á-hì; Taiwanese opera performed in the Minnan language) into the Western symphony orchestra format. Over his life he composed approximately fifty Taiwanese operas and 200 other pieces. In addition, he dedicated himself to the preservation, teaching, and promotion of gezaixi. He taught in the department of Taiwanese Opera at National Taiwan College of Performing Arts. LIU died on March 9th, 2014, due to myocardial infarction. He was posthumously awarded the Special Award for Drama Performances at the 25th Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music. Sponsored by the National Culture and Arts Foundation, LIU’s works were collected and published as The Taiwanese Opera Music of Liu Wen-Liang (edited by MA Li-Yun) in December 2015.
