江文也(1910-1983),作曲家。出生於臺北大稻埕。1914年遷居廈門,1922年與長兄前往日本求學。武藏高等工業學校畢業後,1933年參加日本第二屆全國音樂比賽獲聲樂組入選。1934年,《白鷺的幻想》獲全日本音樂比賽作曲組第二名,1936年更以管弦樂曲《臺灣舞曲》獲得柏林第十一屆奧林匹克國際音樂比賽作曲獎,揚名國際。1938年應聘於北平師範學院音樂系,擔任作曲與聲樂教授,並定居北平。其創作多元,並以民族風格的作品見長,例如《孔廟大成樂章》及舞劇《香妃》等。但1957年,被批為右派分子,1966年因文化大革命身心飽受摧殘,1978年中風之際,仍譜寫《阿里山的歌聲》。1980年代起,臺灣陸續出現江文也的報導與後續的研究,因政治而消失樂壇數十年、才華洋溢的作曲家,逐漸讓故鄉得以認識這位悲劇性的國際音樂大師。

JIANG Wen-Ye (a. k. a. Bunya Koh) was born in Taipei in 1910. He majored in electrical engineering at the Tokyo Engineering and Commerce Advanced School. Interested in music, he attended singing classes at night at Tokyo University of the Arts. After graduating in 1932, he went to work for Columbia Records. He won second place in the composition division of Japan’s Imperial Music Competition with his orchestral piece “White Egret Fantasy.” Jiang also won a composition medal for his piece “Taiwan Dance Song” at the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin. He won a prize for his “16 Bagatelles” at the 4th Venice International Music Festival, which made him an internationally recognized composer. He died in Beijing in 1983.
