SHIH Jei-Young (aka Gerald Shih, 1958-2011), a composer and an orchestrator, is born in Taipei City. He is the son of Shih Wei-Liang, a famous Taiwanese composer and ethnomusicologist. He is a graduate of the Department of Music of National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now known as National Taiwan University of Arts) and majored in composition. He acquired his initial experience in scoring and orchestration while he was in the Republic of China Army’s entertainment battalion “Lu Kuang Art Performing Group” during his mandatory military service. In the 1980s, after his music talent was spotted by the film director Richard Yao-Chi Chen, he began his first step into the film industry by composing for several movies under Chen’s commission. Until 2010, with an artistic career spanning 30 years, Shih had been an iconic figure as successful crossover artist in the Taiwanese music industry. His works include scores for documentaries and feature films such as The Heroic Pioneers, Red Dust and Green Green Leaves of Home, as well as instrumental albums and over 4,500 pieces of advertising music. He even composed for animation movies like Grandma and Her Ghosts. During his lifetime, he made a record-breaking success by winning 3 Golden Horses, 2 Golden Bells and 2 Golden Melodies. In August 2011, Shih collapsed during his concert performance and passed away in 3 days later. In 2012, he was honored posthumously with the Special Contributions Award at the 23rd Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music.
