QUACH, Helen (1940-2013) was an orchestral conductor. She was born in Saigon, Vietnam (now Ho Chi Minh City). She entered the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 1955, and in 1964 received a scholarship to study in Italy with conductors Carlo Zecchi and Sir John Barbirolli. In November 1965 she joined the Chinese-Italian Culture and Economy Research Team and made her first visit to Taiwan, thus beginning her Taiwanese music career. Orchestras she conducted included the Provincial Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (now the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra), the Tainan 3B Children’s Symphony Orchestra, and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. In 1966 she was selected as one of ten outstanding young Taiwanese women, and in 1967 won first place at the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Music Competition. She then served as assistant conductor of New York Philharmonic. In the 1970s she was particularly active on both the Taiwanese and international music stage; in 1979 she was invited by Tsai Chen-Nan, the Chairman of the Cathay Group, to conduct the Taipei Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, which she did until her return to Australia upon the disbanding of the orchestra. Quach’s last public performance in Taiwan was in 1990, after which she shifted her focus to the Philippines’ music scene. She was an exceptionally outstanding woman conductor of international renown who contributed greatly to the development of Taiwanese orchestras.
