CHEN Pan-An (1934-2023), pianist and music educator. Chen was born into a prominent family on Taishōchō (now Linsen North Road) in Taipei City. Many of the relatives in his father’s generation were elitist financiers in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation. The misfortune of his uncle, Chen Xin missing during the February 28 Incident, greatly influenced the family. At the age of 17, he entered Dajia High School (now Taichung Municipal Dajia Senior High School), and studied under the tutelage of Feng-Chi Tai. In 1963, he took an examination to study piano at Musashino onngaku daigaku and graduated from the Graduate Institute of Music of Musashino onngaku daigaku in 1968. Returning to Taiwan, he first taught at Shih Chien School of Home Economics (now Shih Chien University) and National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). Due to the severe physical illness of his wife, he resigned his teaching position and returned to Japan in 1978 and taught piano at Toho College of Music and Toho Junior College of Music. It was not until 1992 that he was invited to serve as the Acting Chair of the Department of Music at National Sun Yat-Sen University and stayed permanently in Taiwan. Chen is a humble person and keeps low profile. A great number of students in Taiwan studied under his guidance and patronage. Up to 2019, he continues teaching piano, his life-long passion.
