WONG, Ching-Ping (1948-2013) was a pipa performer, composer and conductor. Born in Hangzhou, China, Wong later moved to Hong Kong, where he was taught by Mr. Pei-Yuan Lu at an early age. In 1968, he came to Taiwan for his bachelor studies. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in foreign languages at National Taiwan University, and a PhD degree in musicology awarded by the UK’s Council for National Academic Awards in 1989. After founding the Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO) in 1979, Wong served as a conductor for both the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra as well as TCO. He later headed TCO, as bother director and music director, as well as the Chinese Music Association, as director, and Fo Guang Shan Sounds of the Human World Buddhist Chinese Orchestra, as music director. Wong’s mastery over the pipa promoted him as the prime candidate for premiering contemporary works including his own, which are now often considered as pipa classics, such as: Leisurely Wandering (1973), River Runs Red (1979), The Rime of the Pipa (1984). Wong, owing to his indefatigable dedication to Chinese music, was the recipient of the Chinese Writers and Artists Association Award, the National Cultural and Arts Award, the Outstanding Asian Artist Award from the Chinese American Arts Council, and Best Album Producer from the Golden Melody Awards.
