XUE Yao-Wu was an important figure in wind-instrument pedagogy in Taiwan’s early history. He established the basis for wind music in Taiwan and is praised as “the father of Taiwanese wind music.” XUE was born in Queshan in Henan province, China. Because of the disturbance of the war, he was separated from his family in childhood and sent to an orphanage at the age of ten. At the age of eighteen, he joined the Army School of Music, thus beginning his musical life. After graduating, he joined the training regiment of the school of the Combined Service Forces General Headquarters. In 1948, together with the army, he moved to Taiwan, where he served in the military band (the predecessor of the Ministry of National Defense Symphony Orchestra). Later, in 1954, he served as a clarinetist in Taiwan Provincial Symphony Orchestra (now known as National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra). XUE received a fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1972 and further pursued his study of clarinet performance in the United States. Returning from the States, he taught for twenty-four years in National Taiwan Normal University, Soochow University, Fu Jen Catholic University, National College of Arts (now known as National Taiwan University of Arts), and Chinese Culture University. His students are spread nationwide. After retiring in 1994, he moved to Kaohsiung. He died in 2005 due to illness.
