CHUNG Yiu-Kwong (b. 1956) is a composer and percussionist from Hong Kong. Exposed to Cantonese music and classical broadcasts from childhood, he pursued studies in the United States from 1977, first at the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and later at the City University of New York, where he earned his master’s degree in 1982. His self-taught work "The Chariots Ballad" won first prize in the Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest in 1986, prompting his full transition into composition. Chung completed doctorates in percussion (1991) and composition (1995). His music blends Western contemporary techniques with Chinese philosophical thought, humanistic expression, and technological sound design, forming a distinctive aesthetic that juxtaposes Eastern and Western elements. Chung’s works have received wide recognition, including first prize at the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s “21st-Century International Composition Competition” (2000), the Golden Melody Award for Best Arrangement (2008), and Best Composer (2013). He has written concertos for many international soloists, such as Evelyn Glennie, Christian Lindberg, Claude Delangle, and Mischa Maisky. From 2007 to 2015, he served as General Director of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, promoting a “new vision” strategy and producing six albums released by BIS Records. Since 2022, he has been a Universal Edition composer and, following his retirement from the National Taiwan University of Arts, continues to be active in composition and in exploring innovative multi-mallet techniques for the marimba.
