Master ZHENG Si-Sen(1943-1986), a Chinese music composer and conductor, born in Chao-Yang, Guang-Dong Province, learned pipa at the age of 11. At the age of 14, he won the first prize for pipa performance and was recommended to Shan-Tou Art College in Guang-Dong, where he laid a solid foundation of theoretical composition and conducting. He came to Hong Kong in 1963 and worked as a composer for a film company, then taught at New Asia College in Hong Kong. In 1968, he was employed by the Ministry of Culture of Singapore to found the "Singapore National Theater Chinese Orchestra" and served as the conductor. In 1972, he came to Taiwan. In addition to leading the private “First Brand-name Chinese Orchestra” and being invited to guest conduct several public and private orchestras, he also composed a large number of Chinese music, dance music, as well as film and television music. His artistic talent as a conductor and his innovative composition techniques brought him to the forefront of fashion, and was recognized as the most influential Chinese music conductor and composer in Taiwan in the 1970s. Typical works of Master ZHENG include large ensembles, e.g. "Pine," "Bamboo," and "Plum." He was also a master with cross-domain pioneering art gifts. In 1986, he won the National Arts Award for his large-scale dance drama entitled "Rain in Chinese Valentine's Day," which was well deserved. Unfortunately, he passed away because of lung cancer in Taipei at the age of 43.
