Watan Tanga (1930-) is a major preserver of Atayal epic chants. He was born in Rahaw in Msbtunux , Ze-Ren Village , Fuxing Township , Taoyuan and given three names due to transitions of political power: “Watan Tanga”, “Yoshio Toyama”, and “LIN Ming-Fu” . He can sing Msgamil (origin-seeking epics) in the form of a rigorously structured trilogy comprising “pre-departure instructions, route searching, and leading the migration”, covering myths and legends of the ancestral home as well as accomplishments by Atayal ancestor IkmButa. He is also versed in Atayal migration history and improvising Lmuhuw, a type of traditional Atayal tunes. Watan inherited all these from his father Tanga Hola who was versed in the histories of neighboring tribes’ migration. Watan also learned about Msgamil with the recordings of singing left by his father. In 2012, Watan was recognized by the Ministry of Culture as an important preserver of traditional performing arts. His Lmuhuw refers to instructions and injunctions of Atayal ancestor Ikm Buta, which are eternally circulated and sung as part of Atayal’s living history.
