LU Chao-Hsuan (1929-2017) is a Taiwanese guitarist, composer and educationist. He was born in Township of Guishan (now known as Guishan District), Taoyuan City. Lu began to play guitar at 16 and fell in love with this instrument since then. When he was 19, he started to teach guitar at his residence while learning to compose. Later at the Taipei YMCA’s Assembly Hall in 1954, Lu held his very first guitar recital, which was also regarded as the first public event of guitar performance in Northern Taiwan. In 1962, He attended the 21st International Guitarist Symposium in Tokyo as the Taiwanese representative. His biography even appeared as an entry of Enciclopedia de la Guitarra published in 2005, thus becoming the first Taiwanese guitarist to be noted in a world-class guitar reference book. In addition to public performances, Lu dedicated himself to teaching as well as composing. He had over 10 thousands of pupils after giving lessons at the universities, China Youth Corps and KHS Musical Instruments, thus becoming a major influence among the Taiwanese guitarists. He also wrote many passionate and poetic guitar works portraying the beautiful sceneries in Taiwan, such as his most famous pieces “Willow”, “Hometown” and “Riverside Sunset”. Now he is considered as a significant figure and a pioneer in Taiwanese classical guitar music.
