顏廷階(1920-2010),合唱指揮、音樂教育家。出生於印尼士甲巫眉,1928年回到福建永春。1940年考入上海國立音樂專科學校,後轉至國立福建音樂專科學校。畢業後於杭州空軍軍官學校擔任音樂教官,1949年隨軍校遷至高雄岡山。1951年起擔任合唱指揮,包括臺灣省立臺灣交響樂團(今國立臺灣交響樂團)、南堂天主教聖詠團、國立臺灣藝術專科學校(今國立臺灣藝術大學)音樂科、中國文化學院(今中國文化大學)音樂學系與天主教聖家堂聖詠團等,熱心推廣合唱。1970年成為臺南女子家政專科學校(今台南應用科技大學)五年制音樂科創系主任,1986年退休,更榮獲時任副總統的李登輝召見嘉勉。1990年代致力於華人音樂家之研究,共出版三冊《中國現代音樂家傳略》,一生奉獻己力,為臺灣合唱及音樂教育貢獻良多。

YEN Ting-Chieh (1920-2010), a choral conductor and music educator, was born in Sukabumi, Indonesia, and in 1928 returned to Yung Chun, Fujian. In 1940, Yen was accepted into the Shanghai National Training School of Music and later transferred to National Fujian School of Music. After graduation, Yen became the music instructor of the Hangzhou Airforce Academy Choir, and in 1949, relocated to Kangshan, Kaohsiung together with the Academy. In 1951, Yen started choral conducting in organizations and schools including the Taiwan Provincial Symphony Orchestra (now National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra), Nantong Catholic Choir, National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) Music Department, Chinese Culture College (now Chinese Culture University) Music Department, Catholic Holy Family Church Choir, etc., passionately promoting choral music. In 1970, Yen became the founding chairman of the 5-year-curriculum Music Department of Tainan Women’s College of Home Economics (now Tainan University of Technology). Upon his retirement in 1986, Yen was summoned and honored by the then Vice President Li Teng-Hui. Yen was devoted to the studies of Chinese musicians in the 1990’s and published three volumes of The Biographies of Contemporary Chinese Musicians, dedicating his life and effort to make great contributions to the choral music and music education of Taiwan.
