HSU Shih, born in Tainan in 1919, was a Taiwanese pop songwriter. Active in the post-war period, he produced a number of frequently-played songs, such as ‘Anping Melody,’ ‘Night in the City of Tainan,’ ‘When the Gong Sounds,’ and ‘Street Light at the Midnight.’ He received music training in Japan and spent decades doing fieldwork, collecting Taiwanese folk music and indigenous music in the remote mountain areas in Taiwan. His “Symphonic Folk Songs of Taiwan” was composed by applying elements from the Taiwanese folk songs he collected. In addition, he arranged folk songs for the modern orchestra, organized orchestral and choral concert tours, and made commercial recordings. HSU, indeed, was one of the leading figures in the record industry and in Taiwanese popular music during the postwar period. He died in Taipei in 1980.
