LIN A-Chun (originally CHEN A-Chun), born in Longtan, Taoyuan, is a luantan (a form of Taiwanese opera) musician and actress. In 1926, at the age of eleven, she joined the Ruixing Children’s Group by Shiguang Alley (now Liangzhou Street) in Daqiaotou by Dadaocheng of Taipei, studying beiguan music and opera. She was trained to be the character of xiao-sheng (young male character). After studying for six years and four months, she began to work with luantan groups such as Xingfu and Fuxing (Furong), performing the character of xiao-sheng. At the age of twenty-two, she married LIN Huo-Fu, the oldest son of the director of the Fuxing Group in Lukang. She then changed her last name and registered her full name as LIN-CHEN A-Chun. However, because of a mistake by the Household Registration officer, her name was wrongly registered as LIN A-Chun. Later her official information often had the name LIN A-Chun.She directed the Fuxing Group for many years in her middle life. After the group was dismissed, she then worked for Letian She in Caotun, Nantou. In the late 1970s, the director of Letian She, LI Wu-Ji, dismissed the luantan group. LIN then performed luantan and worked for the Xinmeiyuan beiguan group in Taichung, directed by WANG Jin-Feng. She retired in 2000 and resides in Yuanlin City, Changhua.LIN is renowned for her singing technique and for her interpretation of the character of xiao sheng (young man) in the northern school of luantan. She also appeared as other characters, such as zhengdan (virtuous and elite woman), sanhua (male clown), and gongmo (middle-aged male). She is a master of the classic repertory of both the new and old schools, which is respectable. In her later life, her performances of many representative luantan pieces and interviews about her life were recorded by Crystal Records, Changhua County Cultural Affairs Bureau, and the Preparatory Office of the National Headquarters of Taiwan Traditional Arts for the purpose of publication and preservation. In 1998 she was awarded the Folkloric Arts: Lifetime Achievement Award in Beiguan Field by the Cultural Affairs Department, Taiwan Provincial Government.
