SHIH Wei-Liang (SHI Wei-Liang) was born in Yingkou, Liaoning in 1926. He graduated from Taiwan’s first college-level music school, the Music Department at National Taiwan Normal University. He was among the first generation of students to study music in Taiwan after WWII. After returning to Taiwan, he was mostly devoted to music education and established the Chinese Youth Music Library to help promote knowledge about music. Shi was a major driving force behind the “folk song collection movement,” which was the beginning of ethnomusicological fieldwork in Taiwan. While serving as director of the Taiwan Province Symphony, he established music programs at Taichung Guangfu Elementary and Shuangshi Junior High School, helping educate young musicians at the rudimentary level. As a composer and ethnomusicologist, he was devoted to composing and writing about music. Shi passed away in Taipei in 1977.
