劉志明(1938生),音樂學者、作曲家、音樂教育家。出生於廣州。青少年時堅定一生奉獻天主的職志,受天主教會栽培,獲羅馬宗座傳信大學教會法律博士,學成後1967年至臺灣,任職於天主教臺北教區。1970年代再至羅馬宗座聖樂學院,獲音樂碩士、額我略聖樂碩士雙學位,與「大師」(Maestro)學位,在教會法律與聖樂上成就卓越。著作等身,特別是基督宗教音樂研究、西洋音樂史與音樂理論,例如《額我略歌曲簡史》、《西洋音樂史與風格》與《對位法》等,論著超越百萬字。在音樂創作上,遵循天主教儀式音樂風格,不僅為臺北和香港天主教區信徒所喜愛吟唱,也擴及全球華人教會使用。1994年受封天主教聖職尊榮「蒙席」,為臺灣天主教會聖樂代表人物之一。

LAU Chi-Ming, a musicologist, composer, and music educator was born in 1938 in Guangzhou, China. Lau received training and education from the Catholic church. In his adolescent years, he devoted his life’s work to his Catholic faith. He received a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. Shortly after, he moved to Taiwan and in 1967 held a position within the Catholic diocese of Taipei. In the 1970s, Lau went back to Rome where he earned two master’s degrees in music and in Gregorian chants while also receiving the degree of Maestro from the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. Lau is well accomplished in both canon law and sacred music. Furthermore, as an author with many works to his credit, he is especially known for his research on Christian music, history of Western music, and music theory. Some of his notable works include A Short History of Gregorian Chant, History and Artistic Style of Western Music, and Counterpoint. His musical works follow the style of Catholic ceremonial music and mainly focus on sacramental music and hymns. Lau’s compositions are widely sung by believers not only in the Catholic dioceses of Taipei and Hong Kong, but also throughout the Chinese-speaking world. In 1994, he received the title of monsignor from the Catholic church, making him one of the most distinguished figures of religious music in the Taiwanese Catholic community.
