TSENG Chung-Ying (originally named TSENG Chi-Lin <曾麒麟>) is a composer, TV producer and film director. He was born in 1925 in a wealthy family in the Japanese concession area at Shanghai’s Hongkou District. He moved to Xiamen during the World War II, leading a hard life. In 1946 he came to Taiwan alone and worked as a Taiwanese announcer of Radio Taiwan (now known as the Broadcasting Corporation of China). However, he was reported and sent into prison for no reason after the February 28 incident. To avoid further persecution, he changed his name as well as his date of birth and ancestral origin in the 1950s while taking correspondence courses of Berklee College of Music. Then he was engaged in his job as a musician of Taiwan New Drama (新劇) and began his career of music composition. He had composed numerous songs for films and TV, including the movie A Swallow in the Storm (《風雨中的燕子》) , the TV drama series The Young Drum King (《青春鼓王》) and the music TV show Songs of the Rainbow (《彩虹之歌》). He also wrote pop hits such as “Blue Dream” (〈藍色的夢〉), “A Shooting Star” (一顆流星), “Seven Swords of Siluo” (〈西螺七劍〉) and hundreds of new influential tunes for Taiwanese opera. From 1990, he started to go back and forth between Taiwan and Fujian, dedicating himself to the academic exchange of traditional Chinese opera and cross-strait cinematic events. He won the 1st New Taipei City Cultural Contribution Awards (新北文化貢獻獎) in 2017 and the Special Contributions Award at the 31st Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music in 2020.
